FEI Quanta 250


Purchased by the University in 2013, Quanta 250 offering good resolution imaging in high vacuum with the flexibility to image non-conductive samples. Entrance level SEM introduces for new users. Detectors include Everhart-Thornley SED (secondary electron detector), BSE, Large Field detector (LFD) and Gaseous SED (GSED) (used in ESEM mode). Oxford Instruments 80mm2 X-Max SSD detector allows an elemental mapping.

The 3View system attached to the Quanta 250 features an ultramicrotome in the SEM chamber which allows large, high resolution volumes, to be imaged sequentially either under high or low vacuum. The high stability and precise control of the stage allows a minimum slice thickness of 5 nm in aluminium. A series of BSE images can qualitatively highlight the differential atomic number within the volume which can be used to build up a 3D image. The integrated EDX system is capable of semi-quantitative elemental analysis. This system is best suited to soft materials such as biological, polymers, aluminium and magnesium and their alloy.
